Carpet Cleaning Tips – Chewing Gum Removal
Chewing gum can be a sticky mess and may seem impossible to remove, but here are several effective ways to remove chewing gum from your carpeted surfaces.
The heat method:
To remove chewing gum from carpet, get out your electric hair dryer. Heat the gum with an electric hair dryer, be careful not to melt the carpet fibers, olefin carpet has a very low melting point. Use a piece of plastic to extract the softened gum from the carpet. Just let it to stick to the plastic and then pull it up. This should get the majority of the gum. This method is not recommended if the gum is unchewed. In this state, the gum still has the artificial coloring that is added to gum to give it a colorful appearance. While these food grade dyes can sometimes be removed they can also cause permanently staining if care is not taken in the removal process.
Peanut butter
Yes peanut butter is great for removing gum from hair and just as great for removing gum from carpet. Use a tablespoon of peanut butter and press it into the gum. Wait for a ten minutes and carefully scrape the gum away. Now you have to remove the peanut butter. The best way is to let it dry out and it should become brittle enough to vacuum up. It is also possible to gently rub it out with a clean rag and a mild deterrent solution.
Freeze it out
An ice cube is an effective and fairly painless method for removing gum, at least compared to peanut butter. Take an ice cube and put it in a plastic sandwich bag. Now put the ice directly on the gum and allow the cold to harden the gum for a few minutes. Once the gum has hardened it is quite easy to scrape away with a knife.
WD-40
WD-40 has many amazing uses including removing tree sap, tar and sticky adhesive residue and it also helps to remove gum. Spray it onto the gum spot and smoosh it around a little bit. Let it dwell for ten to fifteen or minutes and it should easily slide off the carpet. An old comb may aid in removal.
With any of these methods some food dyes may remain, gently clean with a mild deterrent solution and be certain to carefully rub the spot. Aggressive agitation can fray the carpets fibers leaving a worn spot. If the dye leaves a stain contact us and we can suggest a possible remedy. Of course we can always treat it when we next clean your carpets.
